All is Quiet

Daddy sleeping while Edmond plays Starfall

Lately I've been going in the boys' room before I go to sleep to make sure Charlie is sleeping in his bed. Sometimes when I open the door I will hear a "thud" as I smack his sleeping head with the door. When this happens I have to use the door to push him out of the way so that I can squeeze in there and scoop his little two-year-old body up and tuck him in bed. He sleeps through the whole ordeal. One time he mumbled "Mamma"after I laid him on his bed, then he rolled over and continued sleeping.

Tonight I stayed up late preparing for Joy School, since tomorrow is my turn to teach. When I was finally ready to go to bed I paused in the hallway and debated on whether I should venture into the boys' room. I decided in the affirmative.

The door opened with a creak as I slowly turned the knob. I waited for the "thud" that is me hitting Charlie's head with the door. No thud this time. I crept inside and the light from the hallway behind me cast my long shadow across the floor. Edmond was sprawled across his bed with his massive fire truck balanced precariously on the edge of his bed. Little Charlie was wedged in the upper right corner of his XL twin mattress. All the fits and fights and power struggles of the day were forgotten as I gazed at their little blonde heads and matching Lighning McQueen jammies.

"They are perfect," I thought as I stood there between their two beds. I leaned over and pulled the covers over each of them. "Why don't kids ever fall asleep with their blankets on?" I wondered. I stayed and listened to their little snores and I felt the familiar sensation of my heart nearly bursting with devotion for these little darlings.

I snuck out and stopped at the next closed door in the hallway.

I never check on Scarlett once she is down for the night. Sister sleeps like a champ and I can count on her to let me know when she's finally in need of sustenance. But I was aching to see her...it's funny how I miss her when she's sleeping. I crept in and stood over her bed and watched her sleep. She is my best friend. I will always be in her corner, and something deep inside my soul tells me that I have been in her corner for longer than I can comprehend.

Finally I followed my husband's snores until I arrived at the third door in the hallway. The third bedroom where instead of feeling that I must cast my protective powers over the inhabitants, instead it was I who was entering into the safe realm. He was sleeping flat on his back with his arms out like an airplane and his legs spread out across the bed so that each foot had it's own corner. "He's such a bed hog," I thought smugly as I recalled our eight-year debate where we each accuse the other of hogging the bed.

I layed down and gently pulled some covers out from under his leg and curled up next to my wonderful, strong, precious husband. Then I thanked my Heavenly Father for the beloved people in my life.

All is well.

the pop-in

Grammy and Papa might want to move away from us so they can avoid "the pop-in".

Me and my crew could "pop-in" any old time and demand fruit snacks and pushes on the swing.

This time I had no intention of going to Grammy and Papa's. I had errands to run so I loaded the kids in the car and pulled out of the driveway. As I drove along I envisioned how this shopping experience would play out....me hauling all the kids in and out of the store, trying to keep them happy while we're there, loading all the kids and bags back into the car, getting home and unloading the kids and junk while they whine and cry and Scarlett starves. My resolution began to waver..."We could probably go another day without milk...I think I saw an extra roll of toilet paper in the second bathroom..."

I called Annette just to see what they were up to. "Oh, not much. You guys should stop by..."

"Ok! We'll be there in ten minutes!" I hung up the phone and asked the boys (I love to get them all riled up), "Hey, do you guys want to go to Grammy and Papa's?"

"Yeah!" said Edmond.

"Yeah Yeah Yeah Papa yeah" said Charlie.

I'm so happy for my kids that they have wonderful Grandparents who love them. I had the same blessing growing up...and sometimes I have thoughts and memories of them that are so vivid that it's like I'm there again.

Scarlick

Cousin Carly is three. She calls Scarlett "Scarlick". She'll come sit next to me when I'm holding Scarlett and she'll reach her little hand out to pet Scarlett's head and say, "Ah, baby Scarlick is so cute!"

Baby Scarlick is now three months old. She is the epitome of sweetness. She is the only person in this household without an attitude and that is my favorite thing about her. She spends a lot of her awake time in her little bouncy chair watching the chaos. She sits and plays with her hands and tries to swat the toys that dangle in front of her. When I get the chance I love to sit in front of her and talk to her. When she sees me she gets so excited and smiles and coos and kicks.

She sucks her thumb. One of these days I need to get a picture of it. It is super cute and extremely helpful since she is able to self-soothe. But I'm not looking forward to ridding her of that habit! She sleeps great. She goes to bed at 7pm (same time as the boys) and she usually wakes up around 4am to eat and then she's back to sleep until around 7:30am. Then she takes a 2 hour nap at 9, another at 1pm, and then a little 1/2 hour snoozer around 4:30 or 5. We follow the Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child regime around here. My sister recommended that book when Edmond was a baby and it has been the most helpful parenting book I've read. I feel like they should send a copy home with every new parent when they leave the hospital.

Except for her cheeks, she's a skinny baby. Also, ever since she was a month old, she likes to stand up. If she feels any solid surface under her feet she will straighten her legs and stand. Its so funny because when she was younger she'd be standing there with her head bobbing around since she couldn't even hold it steady. Now she's better at holding her own head, but it's still a little wobbly.

People love to tell me that she looks like her Dad. Actually, people love to tell me that all my kids look like their Dad. Sigh...that's fine, I guess. But I think she looks like me.

Charlie is Two

Charlie is two. For his birthday I made him a train cake.

When he saw it he said, "Toot toot can-can!" (He calls candy "can-can".)

"Toot toot can-can!"

We just had a small dinner with family to celebrate. Grammy bought him these balloons and tied them to one of Papa's trains.

He always does this smile when we say "smile" for the camera.

He was so good at blowing out his candles. Everyone had fun singing to him, it made him so happy.

Charlie is great at riding his little trike. He's like hell on wheels and it's hilarious to watch him go as fast as he can. He loves his brother and when they fight he is always first to say "sorry". He loves to laugh at silly things people do, and this makes people love him. He loves to rough house and get thrown around by anyone who will do it. He calls Scarlett "Ett". He's got a knack for spotting any ambulance, train, plane, police car or fire truck within a five mile radius. He plays so well all by himself that it almost makes me feel a little guilty for not giving him more attention. He's very handsome and cuddly, when I kiss his little cheeks I can't get enough of him.

We love you Char-Char!
