Baby Sister

I borrowed my sister-in-law's camera to take some newborn photos of Scarlet. Since I have no idea what I'm doing, I laid her down one afternoon to see how the lighting would look for pictures the next day. As I was taking a few draft photos Edmond kept coming up and kissing her. He totally snuck in there and stole a kiss as I was taking the above photo. He is so sweet with her. He seriously can't keep his hands off her.

In the Evening

After Scarlett's bath I swaddled her up and brought her into Edmond's room to hang out with us while we dressed the boys.

Then Mater joined her. Along with some other cars.

She was amused by it all.

I always feel like a bad mother after I have a baby. I know I'm being hard on myself, but I can't help it. I feel bad for Charlie, who suddenly isn't the baby anymore and has to compete with baby sister for my lap. I feel bad for Edmond, who has to grow up faster and be more independent. Having three kids under the age of three is very difficult. We are in survival mode right now. I don't know when I will come up for air.

Cherish It

This is one of the best moments of my life.

Right here. This is it.

Her little grunts and breaths in my ear are priceless.

I love this little person so much. And the remarkable thing to me is that I've known she loves me too, from the very first moment I saw her. I can feel it.

Heaven

Daddy took some days off after Scarlett came. One afternoon while Charlie was napping Daddy loaded Edmond up onto the back of his bike and rode to the gas station. He bought Edmond a ring pop and they shared a Klondike popscicle. Edmond was so happy to tell me all about it when they got back. It warmed my heart.

Rainbows

It's all sunshine and rainbows around here, now that baby Scarlett has arrived.

I just wander around my house saying, "Man, I'm so glad I'm not pregnant anymore!" and "Ahhh, it feels so good not to be pregnant."

I say things like this about five times a day. Ask B, he'll confirm.

It just feels so much better not to have a baby in my belly.

Daily Portraits

I love dressing Miss Scarlett every day. I gives me great pleasure.

Oh man. Her skinny little legs are pure bone. And her bum is the tiniest little thing you ever saw.

My Scarlett has a mature spirit. A kindred one. Sometimes when I'm enjoying her little baby body, I wish Scarlett could see herself the way I do. She'd want to kiss herself, she's so dang cute.

It's tradition in our house to take Scarlett's picture after we dress her.

I love having a girl to dress.

The Favors

After reading Nella Cordelia's birth story I wanted to make favors to give out at the hospital for Scarlett's birth. This is what I came up with. Sorry the pictures are blurry. It's embarrassing that I can't figure out my camera.

Inside were little homemade turtle chocolates. It was fun to have something to give to my Doctor and nice nurses and people that came to see us. I even had some left over to give to people who brought us meals.

Meet Scarlett

Scarlett Cooley

November 5, 2011 at 6:11AM

7 lbs 8 oz

20 inches

My babies come a week early. That's just how it is. So I wasn't surprised on Friday night when my contractions started. They weren't painful, but they were consistent. I began frantically cleaning the house. I cleaned all the bathrooms, vacuumed upstairs and down, and mopped the floors. B even polished the stainless steel. Before we put the boys to bed I packed them a bag for Grammy's house. Then B and I sat down on the couch and watched TV. The contractions continued. We decided to go to bed around 10pm. I slept until midnight when the contractions got painful enough to wake me up. I told B to call his Mom and she came over to stay with the boys.

We got to the hospital around 1:30AM. It was a busy night, they didn't even have room for us in the place where they check you to make sure you're actually in labor before they admit you. So, they just put me directly into a room. I was 100% effaced and dialated to a 4. I'm no rookie, I knew I was in labor. But when I asked how soon I could have an epidural the mean old nurse told me that she wasn't even sure they were going to admit me, they might just send me away to labor at home. Then she left us in the room alone. I wanted to cry...so instead I threw up.

Then the mean old nurse's shift ended and her evil presence was replaced by a sweet angel who didn't threaten to send me home. Instead she listened as I explained to her that if they would just give me an epidural, I would be dialated to a 10 in twenty minutes. Then I threw up again. She believed me, (or maybe my throw-up impressed her) and the anesthesiologist arrived at 4am to give me my epidural.

Then they left us alone for two hours. When the nurse finally came back to check me she lifted the sheet and then said, "Oh my. The baby is RIGHT THERE." She frantically called all her peeps in to do their job. My Doctor came and told me to "Push." I obeyed. I started to push a second time and then it was over. They put the baby on my chest.

Scarlett. Sweet precious perfect Scarlett. Scarlett with the smooshed nose and tiny cone head from sitting in the birth canal for too long. Scarlett with a full head of hair.

They took her away for her bath and then I puked again. I always imagined that my 3rd baby's delivery would be my easiest, but it wasn't. It happened quickly, (we got to the hospital at 2am and she was born at 6am) but I was so weak and shaky through it all. And tired. So so so tired. I asked for something to eat and they brought me a croissant. I felt better after that.

They brought me my clean little baby, all swaddled up. I layed in my bed and watched her squirm under her blankets. Every movement she made was familiar. I could almost feel her in my body again, and I knew her. I picked her up and looked at the face that was so new to me, but her presence was an old familiar friend.

I could feel her love for me. And I knew that our relationship had begun long before this life and that it would continue on and on, long after this life is over. It felt good to be together again.

While I was at the hospital, the boys got new pajamas from Grammy.

With doggie booties.

When they came to meet Scarlett that day, Edmond approached me very carefully and asked, "Mamma, are you ok?" Then he gently stroked my IV.

"Yes, honey! I'm all better! The baby came out and I'm all better!"

Then I hugged that sweet, concerned three-year-old and gave him one of Scarlett's birth party favors. (I'll post about those later.)

The next morning I dressed Scarlett in a onesie I made her.

She is so so so tiny. Her little bum and legs are so bony and petite. Her hands and feet seem long.

Welcome Scarlett! We love you!

The Long Board

"You must have so many pictures of the boys on the long board," Jenn told me as I snapped another one.

"I know. I do. I just can't help it. They are so smiley when they're riding with your boys."

Their older cousins are so good to them.

For the Last Time

I took my boys to the mall the other day. I put them in our Phil & Ted stroller and we wandered around. I told myself it would be the last time with just the three of us. The Phil & Ted only seats two, and with baby girl there will be three. One of the kids will have to stay home and miss out. (Not that I want to shop with three kids anyway.)

So we rode the firetruck. Then we played on the playground. I watched my boys run around and laugh and squeal. I've loved this season in our lives. No morning nappers and two happy boys who play together and like the same things. It seems like whenever I get things figured out in my mothering and we have a good routine going, something happens to change our lives and make things a little harder. So, until the baby comes we will enjoy the simplicity of things.

The Non Super Hero

It seems that most kids Edmond's age are into Super Hero's. Edmond isn't....at all. He was invited to a Super Hero party a few weeks ago and the invitation said to wear a superhero costume. I offered to get him one. He declined. So we showed up at the party sans costume and he was immediately directed to the photo session area, where the Mom of the birthday boy wanted an action shot and told Edmond to "Punch me! Pretend to punch me in the face!" Edmond stood there. "Kick me! Pretend to kick me!" Edmond blinked at her. Finally she said, "Smile!" and snapped the picture.

Then last week we went to another Superhero party. This time the Mom had all sorts of superhero costumes that the kids could wear once they got there. Edmond didn't want to wear one. Everyone else did. Even Jillian.

(My son is the non-conformist on the left.)

Anyway, I'm not sure what to make of it.
