Back when Charlie was still nestled safely in my belly, I discovered that Edmond had a favorite song. I often played music in Edmond's room and he was especially fond of a CD that is a collection of Christmas music. He began making a request, 'Rum pum pum song, Mama." After a little detective work I realized that he was referring to The Little Drummer Boy.
And so I played it for him...over, and over, and over. He would stand in front of the little CD player with a whimsical look on his face and sway side to side as the "rum pum pum's" rang out again and again. He loved it every time.
Today I sat with Edmond and Charlie in front of the CD player, and Edmond once again requested his favorite song. It had been a few weeks since he'd asked to listen to it, and as it began to play I leaned against the closet door with Charlie on my lap.
Come, they told me parum pum pum pum
Our newborn King to see parum pum pum pum
Our finest gifts to bring parum pum pum pum
Just then Edmond absentmindedly bent down and gave Charlie one of his frequent kisses. I began to think of Christmas day when little Charlie was born. How interesting, thought I, that Edmond should be so attached to this song before Charlie came to us. I watched the two boys look at each other and thought how it suits them, this song about a boy loving a newborn baby born on Christmas day.
Baby Jesus parum pum pum pum
I am a poor boy too parum pum pum pum
"When did Edmond get so big?" I asked myself as he hovered over Charlie. Edmond then swooped down for another kiss and this time he lingered long enough for Charlie to turn and try to suck on his face. My thoughts drifted to how perfect, Christlike, and innocent these two children are. I began to have motherly daydreams of their lives as brothers, playing together, growing together, working together, and most of all (and hopefully) protecting each other.
As they face the world, I do hope they will have each other's backs.
After all, isn't that what brothers are for?
Then, he smiled at me parum pum pum pum
Me and my drum
